FSM Game Recap: Raiders vs Chiefs- Week 5
Las Vegas Raiders (3-2) | Kansas City Chiefs (4-1)
The Las Vegas Raiders edge past the Kansas City Chiefs for the first time in over three years.
The Kansas City Chiefs were 28-2 in their last thirty games against the AFC West division. Today, as Josh Jacobs said on camera, the Raiders shocked the world and changed the narrative. For the first time since October of 2017, the Raiders are victorious over their mid-west rivals. They picked up their first win at Arrowhead Stadium since January of 2011 as well.
Las Vegas sits comfortably at second place in the division with today’s win and just one spot out from playoff contention in the AFC wildcard. Their next four out of five weeks consist of AFC conference teams contending for a playoff spot, so the Raiders must keep this momentum going. Viewers witnessed a great shootout as both sides racked up over 300 total yards on offense in the first half.
Things were looking scary for Las Vegas at the start, but not for long.
To compete with a team like Kansas City, you have to keep longer possessions on offense, move the chains down the field, and control the game’s tempo. This approach is needed to avoid a dangerous Chiefs squad picking up momentum and going on numerous scoring runs.
The decisive factor in the first half was an excellent performance by Tyreek Hill. Hill beat the Raiders defense through the air and on the ground. He recorded 63 yards on just two catches and got into the end zone off a reverse sweep. He was then contained for the rest of the game, only securing in one more catch.
The Raiders took on the challenge as they went hit for a hit against the defending champs. Don’t forget Raider Nation; we have our own lightning-fast receiver with number eleven. First-round pick Henry Ruggs III returned from injury in today’s game in high fashion as he took a 72-yard bomb from Derek Carr to the house to take the lead by three in the second quarter. Ruggs III had himself a career day, and a similar stat line as if he were back at Alabama, as he finished with 118 yards on just two receptions and a touchdown.
We expected the ground and pound from the Silver and Black, but instead, we got to see the flash and dash scheme on offense.
After 316 passing attempts, DC finally broke his consecutive streak of no interceptions. Nonetheless, after he threw the pick, he never looked back. With the help of Josh Jacobs and Devontae Booker, the offense was capable of moving downfield with key first downs and good yardage runs. For the first time since 2000, during John Gruden’s first tenure with the organization, the Raiders put forty points on the scoreboard. Carr trusted his accuracy deeper downfield, which allowed the offense to get in the red zone and end zone numerous times. He had 347 yards in the air with another three-touchdown performance.
The defense showed they are on a mission to prove critics wrong…
Overall, it was a better defensive effort from both teams coming into the second half. Las Vegas’ secondary had their game of the season thus far.
Kansas City relies on their yards after catches from their receiver core, but the Raiders defensive backs contained the intermediate to deep attempts. Patrick Mahomes, famous for his gun-slinging arm downfield, was forced to constantly scramble and only use his dump-off options for most of the second half. You can credit Vegas’s defensive line for causing issues in the backfield for Mahomes and Clyde Edwards-Helaire.
It’s something we do not see happen much, but the Chiefs’ perennial league-leading offensive crew was held to only one scoring drive the entire second half. The defense was the difference-maker in this game and allowed the Raiders to pick up their third win of the 2020 NFL season.
The Las Vegas Raiders head into their bye week, but come back to face off against Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on October 25th in a SNF matchup.
