https://franchisesportsmedia.com

UNLV (8-10) vs. Boise State (15-4)

The Runnin’ Rebels are beaten by a strong offensive team in Boise State.

Boise State showed why they average the most points per game in the Mountain West after scoring 78 points in total to ultimately defeat UNLV 78-66. Boise State had a nice run in the first half to create separation in which UNLV could not catch up. The Broncos improve to 15-4 on the season and have now won all nine home games that they have played this season. They are defending their home court exactly how every team wants to. With the loss, UNLV falls to 8-10 and have lost their last five road games. They have one road win this season and it was against Kansas State earlier in the season.

The Broncos offense was too much for UNLV to keep up with.

UNLV played well over the course of this game but just could not stay with the high-powered Boise State offense. It was a good start for the Runnin’ Rebels as they went up 19-13 around nine minutes into the game and that was before Bryce Hamilton even had a point. Caleb Grill had the first 8 points for them including two three-pointers. David Jenkins also hit two three-pointers in that opening run.

Boise State countered that hot start by UNLV with a 20-4 run led by Emmanuel Akot giving them a ten-point lead. The Broncos took a 42-30 lead into the break with UNLV only getting 2 points thus far from Bryce Hamilton.

Throughout the second half, Boise State was just too much for UNLV. The lead stretched to 18 multiple times and Marcus Shaver hit the dagger three with a couple of minutes remaining to put the game out of reach. UNLV finished with 12 turnovers compared to Boise State’s 7, however, the main difference was the points off the turnovers. Boise State finished with 16 points off turnovers while UNLV only had 6. The Broncos had 14 in the first half while on their big run.

Bryce Hamilton ended up scoring 24 second-half points to finish with 26 points in total. He and Caleb Grill made 4 three-pointers each and combining to shoot 50% from deep. Boise State shot 50% from the field as a team. Emmanuel Akot led the way scoring as he dropped 16 points off the bench shooting 7-10. Abu Kigab scored 14 points and had 6 rebounds while Miladen Armus had 13 points to go along with 8 rebounds.

UNLV will have their rematch with the Broncos on Saturday.

The Runnin’ Rebels will look to build off of their performance on Thursday and translate it into a victory. They will look to give Boise State their first home loss of the season on Saturday. The Broncos are a team that can score bunches and scores them quickly. It was shown in this game at the end of the first half when Boise State took over and went on a huge 29-11 run leading into halftime. The Runnin’ Rebels will need to prevent those big runs from happening because playing a team like Boise, it is not easy to slow that offense down long enough to complete a comeback. UNLV has one more game at Boise before they travel for two games at San Jose State.

NOTES:

  • Hamilton scored 24 of his points in the second half including UNLV’s final 16 points of the game.
