FSM Essential Recap: UNLV vs San Jose State – Game 21

UNLV (10-11) vs. San Jose State (5-15)

 

The Runnin’ Rebels sweep San Jose State in the two game series. 

 

UNLV defeats the Spartans 67-64 in the second game of this two-game series. UNLV went into San Jose, California, and left with two victories.

Game number two was quite similar to the first game between the two teams, in the fact that it was a tight game the entire first half. Both teams held leads in the first half, and UNLV had the slightest lead of one point at halftime, leading 28-27. However, the game was different than the first game on Friday night because this time, San Jose State would not go away and took it to the final possession of the game to determine the winner.

 

Led by Mbacke Diong, UNLV gets quality scoring from multiple players leading them to a second consecutive win.

 

It was not the best of games from UNLV star Bryce Hamilton; however, his teammates backed him up, and UNLV still left with the win.

The first half was back and forth between both teams, with Mbacke Diong leading the way for UNLV. It was a one-point UNLV lead at the break, but at the beginning of the second half, the Runnin’ Rebels started to run away. They went on a 16-7 run to start the second half, giving them a ten-point lead. It was similar to the game on Friday night in which UNLV ran away with the game. The Runnin’ Rebels got the lead up to 13 points halfway through the half, 54-41. However, the Spartans would not go away in this game and immediately countered with a 13-0 run of their own to tie the game at 54.

UNLV led by two in the 30 seconds of this game, and with just over 10 seconds left, David Jenkins attempted a three-pointer that was missed. However, UNLV got the offensive rebound. An ensuing foul sent Jenkins to the free-throw line in which he made one of two shots giving San Jose State a shot to tie the game. The Spartans leading scorer Richard Washington got the three-point shot off but failed to hit it as UNLV held on to the close game victory.

Richard Washington didn’t have a great game himself as he only finished with 10 points on 3-11 shooting. For the Runnin’ Rebels, Bryce Hamilton did end up finishing with 17 points and 12 rebounds despite 7-25 shooting. Mbacke Diong had a double-double for UNLV and was carrying the team for a while. He finished with 13 points and 13 rebounds.

 

UNLV will return home with a chance to finish the season above .500.

 

UNLV completes a four-game road trip finishing with a 2-2 record, but played well in the final three games of that trip. They will look to continue their play when they return to the Thomas and Mack, where they have played well all season. They will host the Fresno State Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs come in having lost the past two games to #25 seeded San Diego State and both those games weren’t close. They have a record of 9-9 and are 7^th in the Mountain West. They are led by Sophomore forward Orlando Robinson. He nearly averages a double-double averaging 15 points per game and 9 rebounds per game. Leads his team in both of those categories.
