Vegas Golden Knights vs Boston Bruins
https://www.franchisesportsmedia.com/
PRE GAME: Tuesday Jan. 21 the Golden Knights after a thrilling but heartbreaking loss to the Montreal Canadiens will head to the Northeast to play a very talented Boston Bruins team on ESPN+ at 4:00p.m.
Boston is also coming off a heartbreaking loss to Pittsburgh Sunday night, the second of a two-game series with the Penguins. The Bruins jumped out to a three-goal lead in this game but allowed the Penguins to work their way back and ultimately win the game with just under eight minutes left. In contrast, Vegas’ slow start put them behind the eight ball, down 3-0 going into the second period. The Golden Knights showed tremendous heart and resiliency, fighting their way back into the game and forcing overtime after a goal by Reilly Smith with only eight seconds left to go in the game, tying it 4-4.
The Knights ultimately lost the game in a shootout period, putting the season record at 25-19-7. However, the loss comes with some positives, seeing the Knights go back to controlling the puck, taking aggressive and successive shots on goal while spreading the ice and using the space to pass and set up shots. This is an offensive tactic that the Golden Knights were great at last season, but yet lacking this season thus far. Luckily this issue is getting addressed by coach DeBoer, but the question is will it be enough to overtake the Bruins in Boston.
The Bruins are one of the NHL’s top teams this year at 28-10-12 being led by David Pastrnak who is the NHL’s leading goal scorer with 37.
He is also top five in points, being directly responsible for over 70 total points so far this season, making the Boston Bruins one of the league’s top-scoring teams out on the ice, averaging over 3.3 goals a game. While the Knights retain one of the NHL’s top goalies in Marc Andre-Fleury, they have not been consistent on defense at times. This is a trait that has to tighten up if the Vegas Golden Knights want to keep Boston from another explosive start like they had Sunday night against Pittsburgh.
Another slow start for the Knights against a better scoring team like the Bruins would spell defeat for the Golden Knights, especially as the team is now reinventing itself under their new head coach. Getting back to the things that made them such a dangerous skating team, will help Vegas spread the puck around the ice, keeping it out of the hands of the Bruins. This might allow the Golden Knights to even up the number of meaningful possessions in their favor. With a real opportunity to continue to climb their way back to the top of the division, the Golden Knights need every victory they can get.
Injuries for Boston have put the team in a bit of a rut, Bruins starters David Krejci, Tukka Rask, and Kevan Miller are all still on injured reserve for their various ailments. While Miller was sidelined with a knee injury, Krejci and Rask, although starting to skate on their own in practice, will not be ready in time to play Tuesday night against the Golden Knights. Although the team, The Canadiens played with replacement players against the Knights in Montreal, when it came to red hot Ilya Kovalchuk who’s scored over seven goals in the last five games. Boston has struggled however with two of their best players sitting on the bench. The Knights will be operating at full strength as Paul Stastny’s latest injury will not sideline him for Tuesday’s game. The veteran Counterman will reportedly wear a mouthguard and be ready to play, a bit of good fortune for the Golden Knights,
Hopefully, more follows in tomorrow’s matchup.
