FSM Essential Recap: VGK vs Canucks – 8/29/2020

The Vegas Golden Knights defeated the Vancouver Canucks by a score of 3-0 in game three of the Western Conference Semi Finals. VGK currently leads the series two games to one with game four this evening.
Vegas got on the board early with Alex Tuch snuck behind the defense and put one past the left shoulder of Jacob Markstrom. Zach Whitecloud logged his second career National Hockey League goal less than ninety seconds later. The second period was scoreless, but Mark Stone got the insurance marker with just over two minutes into the third period.
Vegas felt in control of this one. Robin Lehner was solid. The only question going into game four is Lehner or Marc-Andre Fleury. Coach Pete DeBoer has eluded to “having a plan” when it comes to the goalies. The plan must be to go with the “backup” in back to back situations. If Fleury is not in goal to start game four, DeBoer has deviated from the “plan.”
Attending a Golden Knights game is a privilege. For me, the excitement starts the moment I start my drive to T-Mobile Arena or make the short walk down the street from work. I am thinking about the game, what friends I will run into, and if I should spend the extra money for the larger sized Electric Lemonade.
The problem is that the larger size comes in this souvenir cup that screams, “I’m a tourist!” I love walking up and down the restaurants leading up to “Toshiba Plaza.” It is always fun to grab a drink from Beerhaus or chicken fingers from Chicken and Waffles. I really get pumped the moment that cold air hits me inside T-Mobile Arena. From the warmups to the pregame show, the game itself, it is all so much fun. After a VGK win, high fiving my fellow VGK supporters and listening to the post-game report on my drive home is my post-game ritual.
Being without Hockey for over four and a half months was hard. Not being able to watch playoff hockey in T-Mobile arena is even harder. But having Hockey on TV has been a nice distraction from what has been happening in the world. I know we cannot wait for the day we can all return to T-Mobile Arena!
I enjoy watching hockey, live or on TV, for two reasons: For the love of the game and the entertainment factor. I love the entertainment because it takes me away from reality. And let’s face it, reality has been pretty rough lately.
Hockey co-mingled reality and entertainment this past week.
To quote the NHL and NHL Players’ Association: “At the request of the players – it was postponing two playoff games scheduled for that (Thursday) evening and the two set for Friday in the aftermath of Blake’s shooting, and in response to the wider issues surrounding systemic racism, social justice, and police brutality.”
Ok, time to process all of this. A short trip to Twitter and Facebook can tell you this was a very controversial move that had support, opposition, and, most importantly, created discussions. Discussions create awareness. Everyone is not going to agree on why the games were postponed, and they do not have to. But at least everyone knows why the games were postponed.
The way I see it is, if I must give up my beloved hockey for a couple of nights because it could lead to the world becoming a better place, I am ok with it. Everyone in life has a platform and can choose what they do with it. This week the players for the remaining eight NHL franchises decided to use their platform to create awareness.
