UNLV (1-7) vs. Colorado State (8-2)

 

The Runnin’ Rebels lose another heartbreaker to Colorado State.

 

UNLV falls to Colorado State for the second time in three days as the Rams win a close one 83-80. A game that was tight the entire way, but the Runnin’ Rebels could not pull off the victory, bringing their record to 1-7 while Colorado State improves to 8-2.

 

A back and forth game results in another loss for UNLV.

This game opened up similarly to the game played between these teams on Thursday: It went back-and-forth for the majority of the first half. Colorado State had the largest lead at eight points at one point, but UNLV quickly erased that. They took a 39-36 lead into the halftime break.

UNLV regained the lead in the beginning of the second half after trailing for most of the game. Halfway through the second half, the game was locked even at 62. The game was also locked at 76 with just two minutes to go. David Jenkins Jr. made a jump shot which was then followed by a David Roddy layup to tie it at 78 with just under a minute to play. Isaiah Stevens then hit a clutch three-point shot with 30 seconds to play to give them a three point lead.

Bryce Hamilton answered with a quick two points of his own and then fouled Isaiah Stevens with UNLV hoping for missed free throws. Stevens did not miss though, leaving 12 seconds left in the game for UNLV down three with one last chance to tie. However, that did not happen as the Runnin’ Rebels could not execute on their final possession.

The Runnin’ Rebels offense was strictly led by only two men. The usual suspects being Bryce Hamilton and David Jenkins Jr. They combined for 57 of the Runnin’ Rebels 80 points. Hamilton provided 28 points while Jenkins gave UNLV a game-high 29 points. For Colorado State, Isaiah Stevens dropped 22 points including going 6-8 from beyond the arc. David Roddy came off this bench this game and gave the Rams 18 points. 

 

UNLV will now shift their focus to St. Katherine.

 

A game that was just schedule for the Runnin’ Rebels days ago is now the main focus for UNLV. Coming off of two tough losses they will now play a team in which UNLV will be very heavy favorites.

In their past 5 games, St. Katherine has lost by no less than 26 points and have not been remotely close in any of them. Their leading scorer is Darius Jackson who is averaging 6 points a game.

UNLV will view this game as a game to get things turned around. Get back on the winning side before traveling to play New Mexico the following weekend.

 

Game Notes: 

 

  • Hamilton has scored in double figures in 26 straight games and has scored 20 or more points 14 times in his career.
  • Jenkins Jr. has scored in double figures in five straight games and has scored 20 or more in two of his last three contests.
  • UNLV shot over 50 percent from the field for the second time this season. It finished the game at 50.8% (31 of 61). CSU was 29 of 54 from the field for the game (53.7%).
  • UNLV out-rebounded the Rams, 34-24, but was outscored in bench points, 26-11.
  • UNLV committed only four turnovers in the second half, after recording 10 in the first 20 minutes.
  • No fans were permitted to attend the game.
  • UNLV trailed by three at the half, 39-36.
  • UNLV has made at least one 3-pointer in a NCAA-record 1,109 straight games.

The UNLV Runnin’ Rebels will return home to host the St. Katherine Firebirds on Tuesday, January 12th to try and bounce back from their back to back losses.
