New FSM Feature: Rebel Vision 22: Rebel Vision 22: 2022 UNLV Football Commit Harrison Bailey
The Rebels added another talented player to their roster over the weekend, Quarterback Harrison Bailey, a transfer from Tennessee.
Marcus Arroyo and his UNLV football program added another player to their 2022 class, this time via the transfer portal. Former University of Tennessee quarterback Harrison Bailey has announced he will be transferring to UNLV after an official visit over the weekend.
247 Sports had Bailey rated as a 4-Star prospect coming out of high school with a .9555 composite rating. He was the 99th ranked overall prospect in the nation, third highest-rated prostyle quarterback, and 15th best prospect in the state of Georgia.
Bailey, who prepped at Marietta High School in Marietta, Georgia, committed to Tennessee as part of their 2020 class under the Vols then head coach Jeremy Pruitt. Bailey started for the Volunteers, completing 70% of his passes for 578 yards to go along with four touchdowns and two interceptions after playing in six games, starting three of them during the 2020 season. Less than a month after the season ended, Pruitt was fired, and Josh Heupel was named Tennessee’s head coach.
Heupel opted to bring in Joe Milton III from the transfer portal. He would eventually be named the starter ahead of the season-opener before being replaced by Hendon Hooker after injury in Week 2’s contest against Pittsburgh. Bailey entered the transfer portal after only appearing in one game for Tennessee this fall.
Bailey informed the staff of his intentions to transfer, and after intensive conversations, his decision remained the same, as he chose to explore all his options. He will have four years of eligibility remaining. He will join a quarterback room that will return sophomore Doug Brumfield, the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year Cam Friel, Justin Rogers, and incoming freshman Jayden Maiava.
Bailey is expected to compete with Brumfield and Friel heading into the season and provides the Rebels outstanding depth in the quarterback room. The depth in the quarterback room is key, considering last year UNLV used Rogers, Brumfield, Friel, and Tate Martell at quarterback during various points of the season due to injury or inconsistency.
Harrison Bailey’s Evaluation:
I reached out to a current college football coach who works with quarterbacks. I asked him to give me an evaluation of the newest UNLV signal-caller. This is what the coach, who will remain anonymous, had to say about Bailey.
Overview – Harrison Bailey has great size, 6’5/220, for a quarterback, and has 3 Years to develop in their system. He is still raw, which is good, and eager as hell to learn and get better! I would treat him like he is a freshman, which is great for him and them. Mechanically Arroyo & Glenn Thomas can mold him, and their weight program, Matt Fyle, will liven up his body!
Bailey didn’t fit Heupel’s system, AT ALL. He is a good fit and addition to the already VERY talented young room – (Cam) Friel & (Doug) Brumfield, then the incoming freshman (Jayden) Maiava. They have one of the better young QB rooms around, especially for a G-5 program.
Leadership – Bailey is a football JUNKIE & studies the QB position & game. He is from a really good football area in GA. Bailey had a coach in Pruitt, and played in an NFL-minded program when he signed with Tennessee, then Heupel’s system, which is different, so he’s seen a lot in a short time. His teammates loved him, which says something about him as well.
Production – In high school, he was big-time & accurate. Bailey took care of the ball, and his high school competition was very good. He was the 2020 Freshman Year at Tennessee when he hit on 70% of his passes and was smart playing in their system.
UT Film from 2020 (played in 6 games) & HS Film Notes –
Ball placement / Accuracy +
Decision / Making +
Clutch Production (only HS big games) – He had some good 3rd down talk about his film at Tennessee. He has poise & presence in the pocket for true Frosh, and you can’t teach that.
Arm Strength – He has good enough arm strength, not elite like Arroyo had with Herbert, but not limiting either.
Footwork – UNLV’s coaches will speed it up with development, they’re really good with QB’s. He’s not gonna beat you with feet but he can get out of trouble to find 2nd platform.
Set Quickness – He is teachable because he understands progressions. This shouldn’t be an issue at all.
Intangibles – He is well-liked and wouldn’t be surprised if he has some other players in the portal that want to play with him, so UNLV should benefit from that. He had Iowa, Marshall, Maryland, and other Big 10, ACC, Big 12 offers as soon as he hit the portal, but now Bailey wants a true QB coach to develop and to get him ready for the next level, and not flash of a conference name, etc.
Summary – UNLV did a great job here. You always want to stack quarterbacks because you never know what could happen. Now they have 2 guys they know can play big-time football, a true freshman coming in who has elite throwing skills, and a transfer with 3 years left who is solid and with a good foundation to blossom. Arroyo and his staff did a good job adding him to their roster.
Marcus Arroyo and the Rebels are continuing to add talent to their roster using all the tools at their disposal. They are getting deeper and recruiting against the current talent already on their roster.
