New FSM Preview: UNLV vs UNR – Week 13

UNLV Rebels (4-7) | University of Nevada Reno (2-9)

The time would be now for UNLV to get off their six game losing streak with in-state rival Nevada Wolfpack making their way into Las Vegas for the season finale.

UNLV has reached the bitter end of a once very hopeful season. The 4-1 hot start is far behind them, and their only in-state rival, the Nevada Wolfpack, remains ahead.

In this year’s edition of the battle for the Fremont Cannon, UNR holds the Cannon and a 3-0 record against a Marcus Arroyo-led Rebels team. However, UNLV would love to get their hands on some hardware after losing a Golden Pineapple against Hawaii last week and not playing in a game this bowl season.

After a mind-numbing loss to the Rainbow Warriors, the Rebels will get their last gasp to be victorious, and UNR would love nothing more than prevent that from happening.

UNR rides a nine game losing streak.

The Wolfpack hadn’t lost to the Rebels since 2019, when Kenyon Oblad was deemed the quarterback of the future for UNLV. Since that day, UNR has driven UNLV into a corner and been victorious against Arroyo’s Rebels.

However, this season has been very, very different. UNR lost two main pieces to their success to the NFL in quarterback Carson Strong and wideout Romero Doubs. As a result, the Wolfpack has struggled to score points. They only average 18.5 points a game, which is the third lowest in the entire Mountain West Conference.

The lack of offense has had their losses come very one-sided. More recently, their loss to Fresno State saw UNR only put up 14-points, dropping that one 41-14. Before that, in a loss to Boise State, they only scored three points while allowing another 40-bomb, 41-3.

This is a far different team defending the Freemont Cannon on the road in Las Vegas on Saturday afternoon. Yet, UNLV did lose a game to Hawaii last week while sitting as an 11-point favorite. Anything can happen.

UNLV, once again, doing anything for a win.

Not much love is given to teams when they can’t find a way to win. This is true for both sides in this case, as documented, both riding miserable losing streaks. However, it is not lost on either side that the same old statements are turning into a broken record, so all that UNLV has left to do is win.

Coming into the season finale, the Rebels are as good as new health-wise. At least to the outsider’s knowledge. With the star duo of Aiden Robbins and Doug Brumfield rolling out onto the gridiron, UNLV will always have a chance. Especially in conference action.

There will be a lot of good things to say about the 2022 Rebels season. But the season isn’t over yet, and they surely do not want it to end like this. The Rebels, who have doubled their victory total from the last two seasons combined, are attempting to win its final game of the season for just the third time in the last 13 years (2018, 2019).

The Rebels have 25 sacks this fall from 11 different players. That is the most for the program since getting 27 in 2004. UNLV is also tied for 15th in the country with 13 interceptions, which is the most since the Rebels finished with the same number in 2015. 10 Super Seniors, along with a group of other seniors, will be playing their final game Saturday.
