New FSM Essential Recap: UNLV vs San Jose State Spartans – Week 6
UNLV Rebels (4-2) | San Jose State Spartans (4-1)
UNLV, already hindered by injuries to skill players, loses star sophomore in loss to San Jose State, 40-7. UNLV lost Brumfield and spotted San Jose State 23-first half points.
Last week in the win over New Mexico, UNLV trailed by 17-points and ultimately came back to win 31-21. On Friday night in San Jose, the Rebels would trail going into halftime by the score of 23-0 and would also lose their starting sophomore Doug Brumfield to an injury.
Chevan Cordeiro, a familiar foe for the Rebels, did not waste time reminding the UNLV defense of his mobility outside the pocket. The Hawaii transfer led his Spartans to a 12-play, 76-yard drive to start his night that was capped off by a Kariee Robinson rushing touchdown.
Cordeiro would rely on his legs in this first half and score two rushing touchdowns, extending the Spartan lead to 20-0. San Jose State was able to hold the Rebels’ offense in check and also benefit from a Cameron Friel fumble to set up the Cordeiro points.
Brumfield only saw four drives in this game, and San Jose State was sure to bring the pressure on him. With multiple pressures and a few knock-downs, the UNLV offense was stuck in neutral, mustering only 30-total yards before Brumfield would be removed from this game due to injury.
San Jose holds lead and sends UNLV home.
Cordeiro would keep pouring it on the Rebels in the second half, this time with his arm. After an opening half drive stalled in a field goal to make the game 26-0, Cordeiro would thread the needle to Dominick Mazotti for a 22-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to a massive 33 points.
Friel would help march the Rebels to a scoring drive that took up 5:17 and ended in finding Senika McKie for the first Rebels points of the game. This was Friel’s first touchdown pass since the 2021 match-up against New Mexico.
The remainder of this game mainly was maintenance from San Jose State, outside of a can’t-miss slant route to Elijah Cooks that pushed the score to a 40-7 Spartans. Cordeiro would finish his night with 230-yards through the air with two passing touchdowns, along with 109-yards on the ground and two more scores. San Jose State would finish with a total of 433-yards in the win.
As for the Rebels, their most disappointing loss saw them walk away with a stat sheet very unfamiliar this season. UNLV’s #1 ranked Mountain West offense was held to the lone touchdown, the potent rushing attack limited to 52-yards, and of course, with the loss of Doug Brumfield, a severe concern looms moving into next week.
UNLV injured, must recover and recalibrate for Air Force next Saturday.
The Rebels were already without wide receivers Kyle Williams and Jeff Weimer, adding the loss to Doug Brumfield. This creates a very concerning turn-around heading into a home match-up with a competitive Air Force team, who is also near the top of the Mountain West standings.
This portion of the schedule featuring San Jose State, Air Force, and Notre Dame is the most challenging stretch of games on the remaining slate. UNLV has had an incredible start, yet they’ll need a couple of good doctor’s notes and a clear mindset down the stretch, especially if they are looking to compete for a Mountain West championship.
UNLV celebrates Homecoming by hosting Air Force on Saturday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available by calling (702) 739-FANS or visiting UNLVtickets.com. The game will be televised nationally by CBS Sports Network.
