UNLV Football running back Charles Williams had 17 carries for 82 yards and became the eighth Rebel running back to top the 2,000 career rushing mark. Williams’ rushing statistic was in a losing effort as UNLV came up short against Colorado State, losing by a score of 37-17. They dropped to 2-7 overall, including a 0-5 in the Mountain West Conference.
The Rebels allowed Rams receiver Warren Jackson to top 100 yards receiving, having six receptions for 133 yards. Jackson helped improve Colorado State to 4-5 on the season, including a 3-2 record in the Mountain West.
The game started as Colorado State’s kickoff returner, Anthony Hawkins, returned the Rebel opening kickoff for 99 yards for a touchdown. The Rams would score on four of their six first-half drives. The scores were due to a couple of rushing touchdowns by Jaylen Thomas and Marcus McElroy. The Rams were also able to convert a 50-yard field goal. They drove to the UNLV 32-yard line thanks to quarterback Patrick O’Brien going 3-5 passing for 29 yards and also helping draw a holding penalty against UNLV’s Javin White for 11 yards. The Rebels could not get anything going, as they punted four times and turned it over on downs once. UNLV gained only 184 yards in the first half, 87 of which came on their last drive. This drive was all from quarterback Kenyon Oblad, as he went 4-8 for 79 yards and rove to the Colorado State two-yard line, as time ran out. The Rebels trailed 24-0 going into halftime.
The second half was a different story, as the Rebels came out firing and drove 52 yards on 11 plays. Running back Charles Williams gained eight yards on three carries, and Oblad passed for 31 yards and helped UNLV drive down to the CSU 13-yard line. After a holding penalty against UNLV and a defensive offside penalty on CSU, the Rebels were now positioned at the 18-yard line. After kicker Daniel Guttierrez converted his 32-yard attempt and missed his 42-yard attempt, he made his one from 37 yards out and gave UNLV their first score of the game.
The Rams, however, wound up driving 70 yards as quarterback Patrick O’Brien completed a couple of deep passes for 40 yards to EJ Scott (15-yard penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct) and another for 20 yards to Warren Jackson. O’Brien helped put the Rams in position to convert a 23-yard field goal at the UNLV five-yard line.
UNLV wound up turning the ball over on downs, as the Rebels went for it on fourth down and failed to convert. The Rams would end up converting another short field goal (24-yards) thanks in part, to a 41-yard reception by Warren Jackson, which put the Rams a couple of yards out of the red zone.
With 10:08 remaining in the game, UNLV would use a mixture of Charles Williams rushes, and Kenyon Oblad passes. Williams had a six-yard gain negated by a penalty, and he also had another ten-yard gain. Meanwhile, Oblad had two big pass completions, one to receiver Mekhi Stevenson for 18 yards, and another big one to receiver Randal Grimes for 14 yards and a touchdown. This touchdown brought the score to 30-10, Rams with 7:08 remaining in the game.
Colorado State had an answer after the Rebels attempted an onside kick and drove 46 yards, with their backup quarterback, Justice McCoy in. McCoy went 2-2 for 20 yards, and the Rams rushed for five times for 26 yards and a score, bringing the score to 37-10 CSU with 3:24 left to play.
The Rebels would only use Oblad on their next drive. He scrambled once for eight yards to avoid pressure. He also went 3-4 for 73 yards, including a 15-yard touchdown to wide receiver Darren Woods Jr. with 1:39 left in the game.
UNLV attempted another onside kick and failed to recover it. The Rams were still trying to score, after starting at the UNLV-46 yard line as running back, Christian Hunter ran for 34 yards on the first play, and gained ten more yards to close out the game with the final score being 37-17 CSU.
- UNLV Starting Quarterback Kenyon Oblad went 22/39 for 280 yards and two touchdowns
