A high scoring back and forth game between the UNLV Rebels and Fresno State Bulldogs took place on Saturday, with the Bulldogs being a bit too much to handle for the Rebels.

UNLV has failed to score in the 4th quarter for the 3rd straight game on Saturday after entering the 4th tied at 27. They were outscored 13-0 in the final quarter.

The first win for new UNLV head coach Marcus Arroyo will have to wait at least another week as the Rebels lose their third straight game, and are giving up more than 30 points each game.

The Rebels simply could not stop Senior running back Ronnie Rivers.

Rivers had a day to remember for the Bulldogs. The Rebels had trouble tackling him all day long. Rivers entered the game with a touchdown in 10 straight games dating back to last season. He extended that with 4 total touchdowns yesterday.

Ronnie Rivers ran for 133 rushing yards with 3 touchdowns on the ground. He also contributed with 6 catches, 99 yards receiving, and a touchdown as the leading receiver for the Bulldogs’ team. Charles Williams had 27 carries for the Rebels for 89 yards and a touchdown. It was Williams’ first touchdown of the season, on a 2 yard rush in the first quarter that gave the Rebels a 7-6 lead. In Saturday’s game, Williams also moved past Kirk Jones (1983-86) into fifth place on UNLV’s career list with 2,713.

It was a game that went back and forth scoring-wise, Ronnie Rivers had a rushing touchdown to give Fresno State the lead, but then UNLV answered with a beautiful pass from Max Gilliam, connecting with wide receiver Tyleek Collins for a 43-yard touchdown pass. Ronnie Rivers got his lone receiving touchdown with a minute and a half left in the first half to give them a 3 point lead going into the break, 20-17.

The second half did not start well for the Rebels as on the second play, David Perales strip-sacked Max Gilliam, which led to another Ronnie Rivers rushing touchdown. At the end of the quarter, Max Gilliam had a 71-yard touchdown run showing off his wheels, which he did all game. He finished the game leading the Rebels in rushing with 139 yards and a touchdown. Then the 4th quarter came, and it fell apart for UNLV. Max Gilliam threw his first two interceptions of the season, both picked off by corner Chris Gaston. The Bulldogs scored 13 unanswered to finish off with a 40-27 victory.

UNLV looks to bounce back and beat the unbeaten San Jose State Spartans next week.

UNLV will now travel to San Jose State to face off against the Spartans, who are now 3-0 after a tough win against San Diego State.

Max Gilliam looks to continue moving the offense as well as he did against Fresno State, as the Rebels were fantastic on third down. They will need to improve on the passing game. Besides the 43-yard touchdown pass to Tyleek Collins, there were not many positive passing plays on Saturday. Gilliam finished with 160 yards, a touchdown, and 2 interceptions.

The defense for UNLV was electric against the pass, however, they struggled vs. the run. They allowed 243 total rushing yards in the game. Against the pass, players such as Adam Plant and Jacoby Windmon got after quarterback Jake Haener regularly. Windmon led UNLV with 9 tackles and 2.5 sacks while Plant had 1.5 sacks himself. This is the third straight game Windmon has had a sack and is quickly becoming the Rebels’ best player on the defensive side of the ball. He became the first Rebel to record more than two sacks in a game since Jeremy Geathers also had 2.5 vs. Wyoming in 2006.

REBEL NOTES:

  • Gilliam became the 11th quarterback in UNLV history rush for 100 yards in a game as his 139 net gain on 16 carries (despite losing 31 yards on six sacks) ranked seventh by a Rebel signal-caller. Of the 18 all-time century mark games by a QB, 10 have happened since the 2016 season.
  • Sophomore DE Adam Plant Jr., who transferred to UNLV from TCU in the offseason, had 1.5 more QB sacks to give the Las Vegas native 2.5 on the season.
  • Daniel Gutierrez made both of his field-goal attempts to improve to 4 of 5 on the season and 20 of 26 in his Rebel career.
  • Freshman WR Kyle Williams led the team with five receptions for 52 yards.
  • Junior WR Tyleek Collins caught a 43-yard touchdown to give him two on the year.

UNLV hits the road next Saturday against the San Jose State Spartans at 7:30 PM on FS2. The Rebels’ next home game is Friday, Nov. 27 against Wyoming.
