The FSM Essential Recap: UNLV vs. Wyoming – Week 6

Week 6 – UNLV (0-5)  |  Wyoming (3-1)

 

UNLV get roped by the Cowboys dropping their record to 0-5 on the season, but the Rebels may have found the person to lead them going forward in Freshman quarterback Doug Brumfield.

 

 

UNLV falls to 0-5 to start the Marcus Arroyo head coaching era after falling to Wyoming 45-14. The same story for the Rebels all season continued on Friday with a lack of offense, failing to put them in a position to win. The Rebels trailed 17-7 at halftime, then got outscored 28-7 in the second half. On the bright side, UNLV may have found that their future is now at quarterback with true freshman Doug Brumfield. The strong-armed, southpaw signal-caller got his first action and gave UNLV fans hope that he is the man to lead the Rebels sooner rather than later. 

 

 

The Rebels defense could not contain the Cowboys running game for the entire duration of the matchup.

 

Going into the game, a key for UNLV would be to try and stop this excellent Wyoming rushing attack. Before this game against UNLV, the Cowboys had 9 total rushing touchdowns, with 3 different players having 3 apiece. Xazavian Valladay, Trey Smith, and quarterback Levi Williams all have had an impressive season on the ground. That continued on Friday and early on. On the second play of the game, Xazavian Valladay had a 78-yard touchdown rush. He led the way as Wyoming had 207 total rushing yards in the first half against the Rebels. Levi Williams also added a 15-yard touchdown rush in the second quarter.

The UNLV offense was silent for most of the entire first half as they only had 44 passing yards at halftime. Charles Williams was held to 4 carries for 10 yards. The Rebels’ leading receiver was freshman Kyle Williams who had 2 catches for 15 yards. He finished with 4 catches for 71 yards. However, UNLV put together a last-minute drive going 98 yards behind quarterback Max Gilliam using his legs and capping it off with a Gilliam 2 yard touchdown rush to keep them in the game.

 

In the second half, unfortunatly it was not a good start for UNLV.

 

The Rebels‘ first possession of the second half ended with a turnover on downs after a 4th and 3 play ended in a 7-yard loss. Wyoming answered with another rushing touchdown. UNLV followed the turnover on downs with a fumble from Gilliam. The Cowboys also cashed that in for another rushing touchdown. Two short field drives resulting in touchdowns for Wyoming stretched the lead to 31-7. Right before the 3rd quarter ended, Max Gilliam threw an interception that later turned into Wyoming’s 5th rushing touchdown of the game and Trey Smiths first.

Gilliam’s struggles and inconsistency led to the debut of freshman quarterback Doug Brumfield. Brumfield came in and threw for 93 yards and ran for 24 yards and a touchdown. He displayed his cannon arm, making throws in tight windows and touch, dropping passes in the bucket to receivers. Once settled, Brumfield showed poise, leadership and may have solved the Rebels’ quarterback question mark going forward. 

But it was a complete rushing attack for Wyoming on Friday as the Cowboys didn’t exceed 100 passing yards; however, they had a total of 399 rushing yards in the game. They finished the game with 6 rushing touchdowns from 4 different players. Levi Williams led with 3 rushing touchdowns from the quarterback position. The Rebels struggled to contain any player who was in the backfield for Wyoming.

 

UNLV will now look to try and get their first win home to the Boise State Broncos

 

Boise State is currently 4-1 with a game against 4-0 San Jose State today. Boise State has lost one game this season, and that came against 14th seeded BYU and Zach Wilson. The Broncos have scored 40 or more points in every game this season. UNLV will need to find a consistent offense that can keep them in the game.

 

UNLV fall to Wyoming bringing their record to 0-5 on the season. They stay home at Allegiant Stadium to play the Boise State Broncos for their final home game of the season on December 4th at 6:30 PM PT on CBSSN.
