A BRIEF HISTORY OF UNLV FOOTBALL IN THE DESERT
UNLV Football began on September 14th, 1968. Bill Ireland would be the program’s first head coach. The Rebels played the first game of their inaugural season against the St. Mary’s Gaels at Cashman Field. The Rebels defeated the Gaels 27–20 in front of 8,000 fans. In 1999, the Rebels left the WAC with seven other schools to form the Mountain West Conference, but also by announcing that the program had hired legendary collegiate and professional coach John Robinson as their eighth head coach.
Fast forward to today. The former Offensive Coordinator for the Oregon Ducks, Marcus Arroyo, is now the head coach of the Rebels and great expectations arrived with him. Coach Arroyo and his staff have already delivered the best recruiting class in UNLV history with the 2020 class. This class ranked 2nd in the Mountain West Conference. With the brand-new Fertitta Football Center and the Rebels’ move to Allegiant Stadium, Las Vegas can expect a new era of UNLV football…
An era of winning.
