We have seen this story before from the Vegas Golden Knights this season. The last time they were on a two-game losing streak, they found a way to rebound and get back on track. Only this time, the Knights have some adversity to climb as they started their 4-game road trip against the Columbus Blue Jackets at the Nationwide Arena in Columbus, Ohio.

After giving up five goals in their last game against the Vancouver Canucks, surprisingly, Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy started goaltender Logan Thompson in the net again, hoping he could have a redemption game this time after a slumbering game against the Canucks.

The first period was scoreless and started slow for the Knights until finally, William Karlsson would get his 6th goal of the season. It looked like a weird goal at first as he shot the puck toward Columbus goaltender Daniil Tarasov. It deflected as he was falling, and he swatted the puck just inside the left post off the skate of Jake Christiansen. The Knights were on the board first, 1-0 in the first.

The Knights were back in their groove to getting on the board first and controlling the tempo of the game, but Vegas would not let up from there when William Carrier would get his 8th goal of the year after a shot from the high slot through a screen to extend the lead 2-0.

In the second period, the Knights contained the lead, but at the 13:50 mark, Columbus would get on the board after Johnny Gaudreau scored from a one-timer shot from the right circle making the score 2-1. The Knights couldn’t get out of their zone, which caused the play for Columbus to get the goal.

The Knights, despite bad defensive breakouts in the second period, still were able to hold on to a lead going into the third.

The second period ended with Vegas still in the lead despite their defensive breakouts, which looked pretty rough in their transitions. In a scary moment, Jack Eichel had to leave the game when it appeared that he got hit in the face by a puck. Nicolas Roy came in a shift to take Eichel’s place along with Mark Stone and Chandler Stephenson.

But in the third period, Columbus would crawl back to tie the game when Boone Jenner jammed in the rebound off of Gustav Nyquist’s shot at the right post to tie the score even 2-2 in the third.

With over 3 minutes left in the third period, the Knights found themselves with a power play opportunity to take the lead but were unsuccessful. Chandler Stephenson skated through two Columbus defenders but got stopped on the shot. The game would not go into overtime as both teams received a point.

Overtime was scoreless between both teams, as the game was now going into a shootout, the Golden Knights ‘ first of the season. The shootout series would go seven rounds, with both teams scoring. It was Gustav Nyquist for Columbus and Jonathan Marchessault for Vegas in the first three rounds. In the final round, it was time for Paul Cotter, who had been excellent at shootouts when he played for the AHL affiliate Henderson Silver Knights, to get the call to give the Vegas the win, and in doing so, he beat Daniil scoring on his left side to give Vegas the victory winning 3-2.

Logan Thompson ended the night with 26 saves, and a .929 save percentage. Also, on another good note for the Knights, the Vegas road record is now 10-1-1, and the franchise’s first road win in Columbus since November 5, 2019.

The Golden Knights’ four-game road trip continues when they play against the Pittsburgh Penguins at PPG Paints Arena on Wednesday. They are scheduled to drop the puck at 4:00 pm. The game can be seen on  AT&T Sports Net (channel 313 on Cox Cable) or heard on 98.9 FM, FOX Sports Las Vegas 1340 AM.
