FSM Essential Recap: Golden Knights vs Oilers – Game 19 – 2022

Vegas Golden Knights (14-4-1)  | Edmonton Oilers  (10-8-0)

The Golden Knights 6-game road winning streak comes to an end in overtime at the hands of the Edmonton Oilers, as they lose 4-3.

The Vegas Golden Knights have been tested throughout this season and have shown the league what they are capable of. This has been evident through their 5 consecutive wins on the road. 

But their biggest test on the road so far was when the Knights traveled up north to Canada at the Rodgers Palace to play against the Edmonton Oilers led by sensation Connor McDavid. 

Last season, Edmonton was one round away from going to the Stanley Cup Final. Also, Vegas has a 6-game winning streak on the road, so winning this game was important.

Since goaltender Logan Thompson played the past two previous games, Adin Hill was called up to start in net against Edmonton’s goaltender Stuart Skinner.

Almost two minutes into the first period, the Oilers struck first when Warren Foegele scored a backhand shot inside the crease to give the Oilers a 1-0 lead. Vegas finally answered back at 16:22 and tied the game 1-1 when Shae Theodore’s shot ricocheted off of Keegan Kolesar into the goal.

The game became a back-and-forth affair between the two teams.

Going into the second period tied 1-1, Vegas found themselves with a great opportunity. Four minutes into the start of the period, Edmonton’s Ryan Murray got called for hooking on Mark Stone.

The hooking penalty allowed Mark Stone to score on a penalty shot to give VGK the lead of 2-1. But the Oilers came back to tie the game 2-2 when Leon Draisaitl scored with a wrist shot from the bottom of the circle at the 10:29 mark of the second period.

Just 38 seconds into the third period, the Oilers took back the lead on a power play goal by Zach Hyman after a one-timer goal assisted by Connor McDavid, making the score 3-2.

The Knights, known for answering back in games, indeed answered back in the middle of the third. Mark Stone scored on a wrist shot assisted by Shae Theodore and Jack Eichel shooting past an Edmonton defender, tying the game 3-3. 

The third period ended in a tie, sending the game into overtime, which resulted in both teams receiving a regular season point. About a 1:17 into overtime, Connor McDavid scored and gave the Oilers the victory, 4-3, after skating past Vegas defenders and chipping in a shot over Adin Hill, ending the Golden Knights 6-game winning streak. 

“We did a good job to fight our way back into the game, but unfortunately, they made a play in overtime and got the win,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We want two points. We are a good overtime team.”

The Golden Knights were battle-tested on the road playing against a tough playoff team, most likely a potential playoff matchup.

“We started with the puck and had our opportunity to generate something, and they checked it back, so good for them. There were some good things to get a point. If we started a little better, a little cleaner, then maybe we get the two. But, at the end of the day, we will take the one,” said Cassidy.

Even though Vegas fell short, they did get a point for sending the game into overtime. The season is not over yet. The Knights have shown fight through all of their games, but they must find a way to defeat playoff caliber teams throughout this season. 

The Golden Knights wrap up their two-game road trip when they play against the Vancouver Canucks at Rogers Arena on Monday. They are scheduled to drop the puck at 7:30 pm. The game can be seen on AT&T Sports Net (channel 313 on Cox Cable) or heard on 98.9 FM, FOX Sports Las Vegas 1340 AM.
