FSM Essential Recap: Golden Knights vs Red Wings – Game 46 – 2023
Vegas Golden Knights (28-16-2) | Detroit Red Wings (19-17-8)
The Golden Knights lose to the Red Wings 3-2 at The Fortress, losing three in a row for the first time this season.
Injuries have been the “Achilles Heel” for the Vegas Golden Knights lately, especially after losing their captain, Mark Stone. Despite the distractions, there was still hockey to play as Vegas hosted the Detroit Red Wings at T-Mobile Arena.
The Red Wings went into this game losing their last 6 of 8 games but were determined to turn the tide against the Knights.
That started about 2:45 into the period when Lucas Raymond fired a one-timer shot off of the assist from Dylan Larkin after getting the turnover from Nicolas Roy. That put the Red Wings on the board first 1-0.
Vegas giving up a goal in the first period marked the fifth straight game that Vegas allowed the first goal. “It goes to the effort,” Vegas head coach Bruce Cassidy said. “Be ready to play, have some awareness, and second effort to keep the puck out of your net if you do make a mistake. Nobody’s perfect. That’s a problem with our starts.”
Despite the early bad start, the score remained 1-0 throughout the first period until Alex Pietrangelo tied the game late in the period after hitting a nice slap shot from the left face-off circle to put the Knights on the board 1-1.
After tying the game at the end of the first period, Vegas carried the momentum into the second.
Going into the second period tied 1-1, Vegas had the momentum and was looking to feed off of it.
But just about a minute into the second period, the Knights were in penalty trouble after Nicolas Hague got called for tripping. The penalty on the Knights cost them, as Detroit’s Dominik Kubalik scored a power play goal from the top of the right circle to put the Red Wings back in the lead 2-1.
The second period only got worse for Vegas. Midway through the second, the Red Wings struck again when Joe Veleno fired a wrist shot off the rush to extend the lead 3-1.
The second period did not go well for the Knights at all, with no chances to score. Going into the third period down by 2 goals, Vegas needed to turn the tide fast.
Throughout the third period, Vegas could not generate any kind of offense to score and had no power play chances at all. Adin Hill was pulled with a minute left to bring in an extra Vegas skater. The Knights scored with 43 seconds left in the third period when William Karlsson got the goal after Jack Eichel’s pass deflected off his skate to make the score 3-2.
The goal by Vegas was too late as they were not able to score again, and Vegas lost to the Red Wings 3-2. This game marked the Knights third loss in a row, which is now a season-high for Vegas.
“Our effort needs to be better in certain areas of the ice. Eventually, we got to it tonight,” Golden Knights coach Bruce Cassidy said. “We’ve had passengers lately. Guys we rely on can be better. Timely saves could have made a difference. I wouldn’t put it on one element. We’re getting outworked in key situations. Key times of the games. Put us in bad spots. We need better from some of the players we rely on.” says Cassidy.
Takeaway
Adin Hill ended the night with 22 saves. Reilly Smith had 2 assists.
On Saturday, the Golden Knights will remain at The Fortress as they take on the Washington Capitals at T-Mobile Arena. They are scheduled to drop the puck at 7:00 pm. The game can be seen on AT&T SportsNet (channel 313 on Cox Cable) or heard on 98.9 FM, FOX Sports Las Vegas 1340 AM.
