FSM Essential Recap: Golden Knights vs Stars – Game 45 – 2023

The Golden Knights drop their 2nd straight home loss, as Vegas gets shutout by the Dallas Stars, 4-0, at The Fortress.

 

For the first time this season, the Vegas Golden Knights hosted the Central Division Dallas Stars. Also, for the first time this year was the return of former Vegas head coach Peter DeBoer who now coaches the Stars.

Before the puck drop, the Knights presented a special video tribute to DeBoer for his time coaching the Golden Knights over the last three years.

“I loved my time here,” DeBoer said before the game. “I kept my house here. We’ve considered retiring here; we like it so much. Just loved everything about it, and it’s nice to be back. I thought we played a lot of really good hockey in the short time we were here.”

Despite the little special reunion, the Knights needed to regroup after losing a heartbreaker to the Edmonton Oilers last Saturday night. Even Jack Eichel said he “needs to play better.” Logan Thompson started again in the net to hopefully hold down Dallas.

Just over 5 minutes into the first period, Jamie Benn of the Stars struck first after shooting a wrist shot that beat Thompson’s blocker side to put the Stars on the board first, 1-0.

Throughout the entire first period, the Stars were outshooting the Knights and getting more opportunities on offense, as the period ended 1-0 in favor of Dallas.

 

The Stars were getting more opportunities in the first period, but the second period remained the same as far as getting shots on goal.

 

In the first period, the Stars outshot the Knights 9-4, but in the second period, Dallas never looked back and continued to put pressure on the Vegas defense.

Just midway through the second, the Stars got on the board again when Joel Kiviranta scored after shooting through traffic to extend the lead for Dallas 2-0.

Dallas remained in control throughout the period, but with just about 3 minutes left, the Golden Knights found themselves with a power play opportunity to get back into the game.

The Knights had two good shots to tie the game, even at one point, had the puck behind Dallas goaltender Jake Oettinger. But the Knights could not capitalize on the opportunity as the second period ended 2-0.

In that period, the Knights had one last opportunity to climb back into the game, but Dallas did not let up. About 8 minutes in, the Stars extended the lead again after Ryan Suter scored when he fired a wrist shot from the point to keep the Stars in the lead 3-0.

Climbing out of a 3-goal hole was becoming more difficult for the Knights as the game was slowly coming to an end. Tyler Seguin scored an empty net goal to put the game away 4-0.

The Golden Knights have now lost two straight games and have suffered their first home shutout loss for the first time in 51 games.

 

 

Takeaway

 

Logan Thompson ended the night with 35 saves, and Vegas defensemen Alec Martinez left the game in the second period with an undisclosed injury.

 

On Thursday, the Golden Knights will remain at The Fortress as they take on the Detroit Red Wings at T-Mobile Arena. They are scheduled to drop the puck at 7:00 pm. The game can be seen on  AT&T SportsNet (channel 313 on Cox Cable) or heard on 98.9 FM, FOX Sports Las Vegas 1340 AM.
