FSM Essential Recap: VGK vs Canucks – 8/24/2020

The extent of my hockey playing days was Inline Hockey. Somewhere around my sophomore or junior year of high school me my friends started playing games in the tennis courts behind my house. We joined a U18 league and had some fun. After U18 it was straight to the adult leagues.

We lived for these games. Each adult league we were in was pretty much the same. We would dominate two or three teams, have close games against two or three others, and there would always be this one team that would beat our butts 7-1 or 8-2. And they would be chugging beer after beer after beer on the bench. We would give it our all, but the games were never close.

On Sunday night, the Vegas Golden Knights had a little “Old Style” in their Gatorade bottles as they ran up the score on Vancouver Canucks. Johnathan Marchessault started off the scoring 11:37 into the first. Reilly Smith, Mark Stone, and Alex Tuch would all score in the second. Max Pacioretty would score in the third, and the Golden Knights took this one by a score of 5-0.

Back to my beer league reference. There were stretches of the game when it would feel like over a minute would go by before Vancouver would even touch the puck. VGK challenged every touch of the puck by Vancouver. The Golden Knights found themselves with plenty of time and space to make plays in the offensive zone all night.

This was a classic “burn the tape” type of night for the Canucks.  Canucks Coach, Travis Green, may tell his team to forget about this one. Although, I think Green and his coaching staff will be up all night analyzing the film.

The one positive for this one out of Vancouver was Antoine Roussel. You could tell he had one thing on his mind. He was going to provide the energy and physicality. Roussel did his best and did appear to “go after” Reaves on multiple occasions. Roussel may have set a record by being the first player to get a ten-minute misconduct penalty for hugging. At the end of the game, Roussel would take one last run at Reaves; however, it would lead to Roussel getting tossed around like a ragdoll.

Good try, kid.

This may be coach Pete DeBoer’s biggest challenge of the week. And yes, I am aware of the infamous tweet heard around the world by Marc-Andre Fleury’s agent, Allan Walsh. DeBoer will have to find a way to challenge Vegas to be even better in the next game. Vancouver can only improve after the last game, and I would expect Vancouver to give their best effort of the year in game two.

In the 2018 NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs, Vegas opened the second round by defeating the San Jose Sharks 7-0. San Jose came back to win game two in overtime, VGK would win game three in overtime, and lose game four by a score of 4-0. DeBoer needs to find a way to keep the boys hungry and focused.

Another honorable mention for Alex Tuch. I will say it again; he is one of the toughest players to stop when he gets a full head of steam. His speed and skill were on display for his breakaway goal in the second. Tuch also elevated his physical play. Some players shine when the playoff lights come on, Tuch just maybe that player.
